This diary is a photocopy of a typescript of the original diary, which has been lost. It includes brief daily entries recorded from 1787 to 1811, describing Cushing's farm, his sloops, his involvement in town and church matters, and his interest in Bowdoin College. At the beginning of the diary is genealogical information taken from the Cushing family Bible.

John Cushing (1741-1812) was born in Boxford, Mass. He graduated from Harvard in 1761, and received an M.A. in 1765. In 1775 Cushing was Captain of a company of Boxford minutemen. He participated in the battle for Hog and Noddles Islands, and served in the Rhode Island campaign of 1778. He was sent by Boxford to the House of Representatives in 1779 and served on the committee to auction off Tory estates. In 1790 he moved to Freeport, Maine where he farmed and owned sloops which carried wood and ...
